Trump warns either a fair deal for NAFTA or no deal

Donald Trump, the US president, warns that any NAFTA agreement must be fair or there will be no deal at all. In a statement issued by the White House today, Trump said that the United States had been exploited for several decades in trade and those days were over, and this message was conveyed to the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trudeau said the planned meeting with Trump to conclude the NAFTA agreement may have collapsed after Mike Pence, vice president, called for the meeting to be conditional on adding a sunset clause.

Canada and Mexico indicated that there would be no quick deal unless the United States made concessions on outstanding issues. The United States has announced that new tariffs on metals imported from the European Union, Mexico and Canada will be imposed for security reasons.

As Trump threatened to get out of the NAFTA, Trudeau presented the threat two days ago, saying Canada's withdrawal is better than swallowing a bad deal.
