Carlos Puigdemont addressed the Spanish government and said he was willing to talk about secession from Spain in the next two months but was ready to meet with Mariano Rajoy for the time being, asking him to drop the court proceedings against the Catalan police chief.

The leader of Catalonia didn't specify his position on independence from Spain in this speech, and the Spanish government has announced that Monday is the deadline to clarify his intention or face direct rule. However, he called for negotiations with the Spanish government.

Puigdemont had declared independence from Spain last week after a controversial referendum. The Spanish government is expected to give him a deadline until Thursday to change its mind before trying to achieve direct rule.

In a letter to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, Carlos Puigdemont said that suspension of the political mandate given by the polls on 1 October demonstrates our firm will to find a solution and not confrontation, adding that in the next two months our main goal is to lead you to dialogue.
